Pole Switchable Electric Motors with Separate Windings

Asynchronous motors with two rotational speeds can be operated by inserting two differently separated windings in the stator. By switching the poles, one winding is switched on and the other winding is switched off simultaneously. To prevent a current from going through the induction winding into the switched-off winding, it must be opened. Motors with separate windings can also be provided for star-delta runs. For this, a terminal board with 12 terminals is required. When switching over, the delta connection of the switched-off winding must be opened.

 

Pole Switchable Motors with Different Rotational Speeds

The Dahlander Circuit enables a pole change and thus speed changeover for asynchronous machines in a cage-rotor design. Each winding phase of the machine (e.g. U-V-W) is separated into two winding sections (1U-2U, 1V-2V, and 1W-2W). Depending on their circuit layout that is either in series or parallel operation, the number of poles can be adjusted in a ratio of 2:1. The rotating field speed will change accordingly. The delta-double star connection is used most commonly. When the winding sections are connected in series, the strands are delta connected, whereas the parallel-connected winding sections are star-connected.

 

Constant and Quadratic Torques

Pole-switchable motors are drives with a constant and quadratically increasing counter torque. The AC motors can be used for a rated voltage of e.g. 230V, 400V, or 660V and are generally designed for direct switch-on via the pole sequence. 60Hz versions or IEC 38 special voltages are also possible. The pole switch is achieved by:

- Two separate windings in the stator, e.g. 6-4 poles
- One winding in the Dahlander connection, e.g. 8-4 poles
- Two separate windings, including a Dahlander circuit, e.g. 8-6-4 poles
- Two separate windings, where both are a Dahlander circuit, e.g. 12-8-6-4 poles
